Zovirax (Acyclovir), also
commonly known as Acyclovir, is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue. Studies
on cell cultures have proven its great anti-viral potential against such
viruses as human herpes virus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein Barr virus or
cytomegalovirus, against which it takes very effective in vitro and
vivoinhibitory actions.

The primary use for Zovirax
(Acyclovir) is to inhibit and stop the production of herpes virus, its actions
limiting the effects of herpes virus outbreaks in length and severity, on
mucous membranes or skin. Its usage is also recommended in treating recurring
genital herpes, Shingles or herpes zoster infections. Zovirax
(Acyclovir) can be prescribed for patients with severe AIDS (with CD4 count of
under 50 per micro liter) or for patients that undergo operations such as
allogenic bone marrow transplant.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Warnings
Extra precaution is are to be
taken by patients with wounds or open lesions, due to easier transmission of
the infections.Although Zovirax (Acyclovir) has no known adverse effect on
fertility, its use by pregnant or nursing women may be hazardous due to its
tendency to pass into the breast milk. Therefore, prior consulting with your
doctor is recommended in such cases. Elderly patients are strongly advised
to keep proper hydration by consuming lots of liquids while under Zovirax
(Acyclovir) treatment, due to the great increase in creatinine levels. Proper
hydration helps keeping creatinine levels to an optimum level.Also, Zovirax
(Acyclovir) may not be recommended to patients suffering from liver, kidney or
brain disorders.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Intake Guidelines
While following a treatment
with Zovirax (Acyclovir), the patient must follow the exact instructions that
the doctor has given him. Each dose of the drug should be accompanied by a
glass of water. Consumption of plenty of fluids may also be advised to patients
under Zovirax (Acyclovir) treatment.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Dosage
The correct dosage of Zovirax
(Acyclovir) should be obtained by the patient’s personal doctor, because the
suitable dosage of the drug depends on several factors. It can vary from 200 mg
5 times per day (Herpex simplex infections, double dosage for patients with a
greater risk of vulnerability, such as patients with recent history of bone
marrow transplant), 200 mg every 6 hours (or 400 mg every 12 hours), in cases
of satisfactory immunity. It is advised to interrupt Zovirax (Acyclovir)
treatment at a 6-12 month interval, to examine the changes in the disease
history and for monitoring the virus patterns.
In herpes
zoster treatment, the recommended dosage is 800 mg Zovirax (Acyclovir) at
4 hour intervals (5 intakes in all omitting the night dosage), for an estimated
duration of a week. In severe AIDS conditions, with CD4 counts of less than 50
per micro liter, as well as for patients that undergo allogenic bone marrow
transplants, the Zovirax (Acyclovir) dosage will be 800 mg per intake every 6
hours.For the treatment of children of 2 or more years of age infected
with Herpes Simplex, normal Zovirax (Acyclovir) dosage for adults may be
prescribed. The dosage shall be halved in cases where patients are children
under 2 years of age. Normal dosage for adults is also recommended for
treatment of children with AIDS with CD4 count of under 50 per micro liter.It
is recommended that the Zovirax (Acyclovir) dosage should be carefully monitored
for patients that are suffering from renal impairment, as the acyclovir levels
can rise above the safe counts. The Zovirax (Acyclovir) dosage in such cases
should never exceed two intakes per day, in 200 mg doses.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Overdose
If you have taken a bigger
dose of the drug than prescribed by your doctor (or if you are experiencing any
abnormal or disturbing side effects) you should seek medical attention
immediately, either consulting a doctor or going to the hospital.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Missed Dose
It is recommended that the
patient should not miss any of his doses of Zovirax (Acyclovir). However, if he
or she happens to miss one, it should be taken in as soon as the patient
remembers. If it is almost time for another dose of Zovirax (Acyclovir), it is
best for the patient to skip the missed dose and to continue following his
regular treatment schedule. Taking a double dose of the drug is strictly
prohibited, unless the prescribing doctor advises otherwise.
Zovirax (Acyclovir) Side Effects
If you are experiencing any of these side effects during your treatment

as soon as possible
While the most commonly
reported side effects of Zovirax (Acyclovir) treatments are allergic rashes,
there are other symptoms that have been observed during Zovirax (Acyclovir)
treatments, such as gastrointestinal problems (nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, abdominal pains), headaches, dizziness, fatigue, hair loss, tiredness
or bruising.
