Xifaxan Information
Xifaxan is an antibiotic used to fight infections in the
intestines. It treats an infection called travelers’ diarrhea caused by
drinking fluids and eating foods contaminated with E.Coli. Xifaxan is different
from other medications; this medicine does not get absorbed into the
bloodstream but goes directly to the intestines. This antibiotic is used to
treat the intestines only and cannot be used for other infections.
Xifaxan Indications
This medication should only be used to treat travelers’
diarrhea and only be given to patients over the age of 12. This medication
comes in two different strengths a 200 mg tablet, which is taken for three days
at three times a day and a 550 mg tablet to be taken twice a day and this
medication may be taken with food or without food.
Xifaxan Warnings
Xifaxan is not effective in treating diarrhea due to
other illnesses other than E.Coli.The patient should not use this medication if
they are allergic to this medication. If you are having symptoms such as
diarrhea with fever, bloody or watery stool do not use Xifaxan. This medication
will not cause serious side effects. Xifaxan could harm your unborn
child, if you are pregnant or become pregnant while being treated inform your
physician.
Xifaxan Intake Guidelines
This medicine should only be taken by the person it is
prescribed for. Take the medicine as directed until it is completely
gone, even if you are feeling better. Xifaxan should be stored at room
temperature. Keep away from moisture and heat.
Xifaxan Dosage
This medication is taken orally for three days at three
times a day.
Xifaxan Overdose
As with any medicine if you think you have taken too many
seek medical care. There are no known symptoms of overdosing with this
medication.
Xifaxan Missed Dose
If you miss a dose you can take the missed dose when you
remember, as long it is not time for the next scheduled dose and if it is take
only one dose; never take two doses at once.
Xifaxan Side effects
There are no serious side effects associated with this
medication but there are a few side effects that may be bothersome to some
individuals, if they get to be real annoying you can contact your physician.
The symptoms are:

Headache
·
Nausea, constipation
·
Fever
·
Skin rash and or itching
·
Stomach pain, gas and bloating
·
Feeling like you need to have
a bowel movement
·
Vaginal discharge or itching
If you are having an allergic reaction to this medication
the symptoms will include trouble breathing, swelling of the throat and tongue,
and hives. If you have any of these symptoms seek emergency care at once.
Xifaxan Drug Reactions
Inform your physician of all over the counter medication
you are taking, including vitamins, supplements and herbs and also inform the
physician of all medications you are taking on a daily basis. There are no
known medications that will interfere in the treatment of using Xifaxan. You
