Elavil Information
Elavil belongs to the group of drugs known as Tricyclic
antidepressants. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced
and cause depression.
Elavil is used to relieve symptoms of
mental depression such as tiredness; feelings of sadness,
worthlessness, or guilt; sleeping too much; insomnia; changes in appetite; loss
of interest in daily activities; and thoughts of death or suicide. It is also
used to treat Bulimia, to control chronic pain, to prevent migraine
headaches, and to treat pathological weeping and laughing syndrome associated
with multiple sclerosis. Elavil may also be used for purposes not mentioned
here.
Elavil may be harmful to unborn baby. Do not take Elavil
without consulting first your doctor if you are pregnant or could become
pregnant during the treatment period. Elavil may affect a nursing baby for it
passes into breast milk. Do not take Elavil without consulting first your
doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Elavil may make your skin more
sensitive to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and apply sun block if you stay
out of the sun. Elavil may cause you to become less alert or drowsy, therefore
it should not be taken if you are to drive or to operate dangerous machinery or
participate in activities that require full mental alertness.
